Joanne BOYER

Born in August 1990 in Versailles and a self-taught painter, Joanne Boyer is part of the young generation of contemporary painters: those who are moving away from ‘all abstract’ and conceptual art to create contemporary art that is both woven with references to today and centuries-old know-how.

Joanne Boyer bares her soul with both modesty and frankness in her paintings, where the canvas appears as an intimate space but also as a territory that protects her and shelters her from the madness of the world. She displays her melancholic moods, a feeling reinforced by her choice of a limited colour palette dominated by ochres and mineral tones. The subjects emerge from the shadows, in the manner of Caravaggio and Courbet, revealed by light, the quest for which is something of an obsession for the artist.

Her painting is both terribly timeless and firmly rooted in our era, a paradox that emerges on the canvas in the skilful balance between the material, the refined settings, the aesthetics of ruin, the familiar dramaturgy of art history and the choice of subjects.
