H.K. Kwon

Presentation

First, he creates a loose base in black or white on the canvas. When he wants to achieve a smeared effect, he applies poppy oil to hydrate the support. The background paint is neither a simple underpainting, nor even a carefully prepared sketch. It is simply a ‘brushstroke’, a writing based on automatism. He then creates an expression of the canvas against the background. He repeatedly draws a certain trajectory neatly from top to bottom with a finger or a knife. The paint is sometimes superimposed by accident, leaving a texture with different thicknesses. Superimposing a new expression on the colour already drawn on the background amounts to ‘drawing’ and ‘erasing’ at the same time. The process of clumping and overlapping, of creating and extinguishing, is directly linked to composition, colour, thickness, density and texture.
