SLAG&RX is pleased to present “Inhabitance,” an outdoor sculpture exhibition by Dumitru Gorzo. This exhibition once again reflects Gorzo's profound engagement with the concept of drawing as a means of exploring and investigating form.
For Gorzo, drawing transcends the mere representation of specific subjects; it serves as a vehicle for continuous inquiry into the structural and conceptual possibilities of forms. This interplay is particularly evident in the current exhibition. Each sculpture acts as both a continuation and a culmination of Gorzo's drawings, bringing to life the fluidity and spontaneity of his works on paper. Furthermore, his latest body of work draws inspiration from a rich tapestry of influences, ranging from primitive and modernist art to classical and folkloric traditions.
In this project, Gorzo has devoted several months to the meticulous craft of working with wooden planks, employing techniques of cutting, carving, and painting. The outcome is a cohesive assembly of forms that function autonomously while also coalescing into an immersive installation, evoking a synthesis akin to that of a book and a forest. Within this installation, viewers are invited to navigate a landscape of layered narratives, continuity, tension, and tranquility. It serves as a personal homage to the rural environment of Northern Transylvania, where Gorzo spent his formative years, resonating with the imaginary creatures of family lore and the wooden poles gracing gates and historic structures.
Crucially, these forms do not denote a specific locale; rather, they exist in their own right, representing the present moment and their intrinsic essence. Each piece stands as a testament to Gorzo's in-depth exploration of form, forged through a personal connection to his upbringing.
