Tamara KOSTIANOVSKY

Presentation

Tamara Kostianovsky is an Argentine-American artist based in New York whose work explores themes related to the environment, violence and consumer society, often using second-hand clothing to create installations and sculptures that are both visceral and delicate. Through a play on contrasts between gentleness and aggression, her installations highlight the nuances of violence that exist between personal experience and its normalisation on a social and ecological scale, suggesting the almost overly comfortable intimacy of human culture with violence towards all living species.
Kostianovsky obtained his BFA from the Prilidiano Pueyrredón National School of Fine Arts in Buenos Aires, Argentina, followed by a Master of Fine Arts from the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts in Philadelphia, USA.

Her work has been exhibited at institutions such as the Royal Academy in London; the Brooklyn Museum in New York; the Musée de la Chasse et de la Nature in Paris; the Cheekwood Museum in Tennessee; the Baker Museum in Florida; the Denver Botanic Gardens in Colorado; Smack Mellon in New York; the Fuller Craft Museum in Massachusetts; Ogden Contemporary Arts in Utah; UMOCA in Utah; El Museo del Barrio in New York; the Jewish Museum in New York; the Nevada Museum of Art; the Musée du Textile et de la Mode in France; the Whyte Museum of the Canadian Rockies in Banff, Alberta; the Newport Art Museum in Rhode Island; the Kunsthalle Trier in Germany; Les Franciscaines Art Centre in France; the Staten Island Museum of Art in New York; the 21C Museum in Kentucky; and the Chicago Architecture Biennial.
Kostianovsky is the recipient of prestigious awards, including a Guggenheim Fellowship, as well as grants from the New York Foundation for the Arts, the Pollock-Krasner Foundation, the Virginia A. Groot Foundation and the Sustainable Arts Foundation.
